Developing Customized Training for Children's Ministry Leaders Supporting Children with Down Syndrome
Problem
Children's ministry teachers and volunteers wanted to create more inclusive learning environments for children with Down syndrome but lacked the knowledge, confidence, and practical strategies to do so effectively. Faith-based educators expressed concerns about adapting instruction, responding to behaviors, and ensuring every child felt welcomed, supported, and able to participate.
Solution
After meeting with ministry leaders and listening to their concerns, CLP Consulting developed a customized training program tailored specifically to the needs of faith-based educators.
CLP Founder, Dr. Susan King, presented at a Disability Awareness Conference in Washington, D.C., sharing practical, research-informed strategies to help teachers better serve children with Down syndrome. The presentation focused on:
Multi-sensory teaching strategies
Positive behavior support techniques
Effective communication practices
Building structured and supportive learning environments
Partnering with parents and caregivers
To reinforce the training, CLP Consulting also developed a comprehensive presentation resource that participants could use as an ongoing reference in their ministries.
Result
The presentation was well attended and received positive feedback from participants. Following the conference, CLP Consulting received requests for additional training sessions and coaching, demonstrating the value of providing customized educational solutions that address the unique needs of faith communities serving children with disabilities.
